Project Summary

The NYDA Post Funding Coaching Program was a 6-month initiative designed to provide bookkeeping training, mentorship, and coaching to 10 entrepreneurs in eMbalenhle, Govan Mbeki Local Municipality, South Africa. The Programme was funded by the Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda) in collaboration with the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), the programme focused on equipping entrepreneurs with essential financial management skills and addressing key business challenges.

Program Objectives

  • To train entrepreneurs on bookkeeping best practices, including transaction recording, cashbook management, and financial record keeping.
  • To enhance the management competencies of SMMEs by creating a supportive environment for networking and information exchange.
  • To improve business compliance, turnover, sustainability, and job retention.
  • To facilitate access to non-financial resources, capacity-building services, and market opportunities.

Program Activities

  • Bookkeeping Training: A comprehensive group training session was conducted on March 1, 2022, covering bookkeeping basics, record-keeping techniques, and the use of financial templates.
  • Individual Coaching Sessions: Monthly one-on-one sessions were held to provide personalized guidance, address specific business challenges, and monitor progress.
  • Group Coaching Sessions: Monthly group sessions were conducted via Zoom to discuss specific topics, evaluate progress, and foster peer learning.
  • Peer Coaching: Participants were encouraged to support each other outside the formal sessions and share their experiences.
  • Financial Record Submission: Entrepreneurs were required to submit their financial records monthly for monitoring and evaluation purposes.

Outcomes of Activities

  • Improved Financial Management: Participants gained a better understanding of bookkeeping principles and were able to implement basic financial management systems in their businesses.
  • Enhanced Business Knowledge: The program equipped entrepreneurs with knowledge and skills in marketing, planning, costing and pricing, and business planning.

Success Stories and Achievements

  • 7 out of 10 entrepreneurs completed the program evaluation, demonstrating a high level of engagement.
  • 5 entrepreneurs consistently used the provided templates for record-keeping, indicating effective knowledge transfer.
  • 6 entrepreneurs were able to complete their income statements using their cashbooks, highlighting improved financial literacy.
  • Participants expressed a high level of satisfaction with the program and showed a willingness to recommend it to others.

Conclusion

The NYDA Post Funding Coaching Program effectively addressed the need for bookkeeping training and business development support among entrepreneurs in eMbalenhle. Despite challenges such as low attendance in group sessions and technological limitations, the program achieved positive outcomes in terms of financial management, business knowledge, and confidence building. The success stories and high satisfaction levels among participants underscore the value and impact of this initiative.
