Project Summary

The Nkangala WECP was a 10-month coaching and mentorship program designed to support women entrepreneurs in the Nkangala District of South Africa. The project was funded by the Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda) and provided participants with access to group coaching sessions, individual mentoring, and networking opportunities. Despite the challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the project achieved notable successes.

Program Objectives

  • To develop and enhance the management competencies of women entrepreneurs.
  • To create a supportive environment for networking, sharing of experiences, and information exchange.
  • To provide guidance and support to entrepreneurs in refining their business models and processes.
  • To facilitate access to markets and opportunities for participating enterprises.

Program Activities

  • Group Coaching Sessions: A total of 10 group coaching sessions were held, covering topics such as entrepreneurship, financial management, marketing, and business strategy.
  • Individual Mentoring: Individual coaching sessions were provided to support entrepreneurs in developing and implementing their growth plans.
  • Networking Opportunities: The program facilitated networking events and created opportunities for participants to connect and collaborate.
  • Guest Speakers: Experienced entrepreneurs and industry experts were invited to share their insights and experiences with the participants.
  • Support from Seda: The program linked participants with Seda and helped them to access the support and resources available.

 Outcomes of Activities

  • Enhanced Business Knowledge: Participants reported gaining a better understanding of various business aspects, including financial management, marketing, and business strategy.
  • Improved Business Performance: Some participants reported significant improvements in their businesses, such as acquiring new contracts, expanding their operations, and diversifying their income streams.
  • Increased Confidence: The program helped to boost the confidence of participants and equipped them with the skills and knowledge to manage their businesses effectively.
  • Stronger Networks: Participants formed valuable connections with other entrepreneurs and industry experts.

Success Stories and Achievements

  • The owner of Bella Bonni Guesthouse was recognized as one of the most influential women in business and government in SADC in the Tourism, Leisure sector by the CEO Global Pan African Awards. (Aug 2019)
  • Caroline Bellezaa Salon was featured in the September cover of Get It, a regional lifestyle magazine. (Sept 2019)
  • Ruby & Owethu Construction signed a contract worth R20 million to construct a clinic. (Jan 2020)
  • Visit Vakasha built a bigger multi-purpose venue, and the entrepreneur was able to separate her business into seven individual companies under the Visit Vakasha group.
  • Ledumo Lodge expanded their business by acquiring apartments and building 14 rooms for monthly rentals.

 

Conclusion

WECP demonstrated the positive impact of coaching and mentorship programs on women entrepreneurs. Despite the challenges faced, the project succeeded in empowering participants with the skills, knowledge, and networks needed to grow their businesses. The success stories showcased the potential of women entrepreneurs in the Nkangala District and the importance of initiatives that support their development.
