Project Summary

The Ehlanzeni SECP was a 10-month coaching program designed to support Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) in the Ehlanzeni District of South Africa. Implemented by Sothaba Enterprise Associates and funded by the Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda), the program focused on practical coaching to enhance self-awareness and drive sustainable business growth.

 

Program Objectives

  • To facilitate the creation of an enabling operating environment for business enterprises.
  • To facilitate the building of sustainable and competitive small business enterprises.
  • To facilitate access to non-financial resources, capacity building, products, and services.
  • To act as a business information hub for business enterprises.
  • To allow small business enterprises to share experiences, create networking opportunities, and learn from each other.
  • To provide advice and support to small business enterprises.

 

Program Activities

  • Group Coaching Sessions: 17 online group coaching sessions were held, covering topics such as financial management, leadership development, HR management, branding and marketing, business processes, tax compliance, and access to finance.
  • Individual Coaching Sessions: One-on-one coaching sessions were conducted to provide personalized guidance and support to each entrepreneur in developing and implementing their growth plans.
  • Strategy Bootcamp: An intensive 3-day bootcamp was held at the University of Mpumalanga to induct and orient the participants, develop shared group objectives, and support the development of enterprise strategies and growth plans.
  • Guest Speakers: Experienced professionals and industry experts were invited to share their knowledge and insights on various topics during the group coaching sessions.
  • Online Platform: Sothaba Institute Platform was utilised for communication, information sharing, and distribution of assignments.

 

Outcomes of Activities

  • Improved Business Performance: Participating enterprises reported an increase in turnover and number of employees during the program period.
  • Enhanced Business Knowledge: The program equipped entrepreneurs with a better understanding of various business aspects, including financial management, leadership, HR processes, and marketing strategies.
  • Increased Confidence: The coaching method helped boost the confidence of participants as business owners by encouraging them to find their own solutions.
  • Stronger Networks: Participants formed connections with other entrepreneurs, Seda representatives, and industry experts.
  • Improved Technology Skills: Participants learned how to use online platforms such as Zoom and Google Drive effectively.

 

Success Stories and Achievements

  • Malomini Strategies: Developed a strategic plan, an e-learning platform, and finalized their corporate image.
  • CBK Master of the Books: Regained motivation to continue with the business, rebuilt client base, and increased revenue.
  • Mashinini Trading: Improved business structure, delegation, and understanding of financial statements.
  • Gemu Plumbing and Construction: Improved compliance in HR and finance, including separating personal and business funds.
  • Laula Trading: Improved management skills, employee relations, and confidence as a business owner.
  • Museto Group: Reduced machine rental costs, improved efficiency and productivity, and planned for business diversification.
  • ADDX: Implemented a proper production plan, learned about channels for loans and grants, and improved record keeping and compliance.

 

The Ehlanzeni SECP demonstrated the positive impact of coaching programs on SMMEs. Despite challenges such as COVID-19 and initial technological illiteracy, the project succeeded in empowering participants with the knowledge, skills, and networks needed to improve their businesses. The success stories and reported increase in turnover and employment highlight the effectiveness of the program in supporting the growth and sustainability of SMMEs in the Ehlanzeni District.
